I recently attended the Justice for Children Recognition Gala, a benefit for the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii at the ARC of Hilo. This organization’s mission is to help sexually, physically, and emotionally abused children and children who are witnesses to crime. This group supports children by filling requests for special needs and enhancements such as clothing, hygiene items, transportation, bedding, prom dresses, and supplies for school, sports, dance, and arts.

Seeing and spending time with friends some of whom I hadn’t seen in a while was a bonus.

This year, Cathy Lowder and the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay were recognized for their support. Cathy Lowder saw first-hand the effects of child abuse and neglect. Her work as a Probation Officer with the First Circuit, Program Coordinator for the Judiciary’s Professional Foster Parent Program, Program Director of the Children’s Advocacy Center, and Public Guardian for the Third Circuit allowed her to be in a uniquely qualified situation to support the needs of the youth she worked with. Additionally, she is a busy volunteer for organizations such as the Sierra Club, Friends of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, ARC of Hilo, and Ku’ikahi Mediation Center. The Rotary Club of Hilo Bay supported the Children’s Justice Center with purchases of bunk beds, mattresses, and bedding in the amount of over $15,000! This allowed the children they served to have a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

Mahalo to the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii and all who work and support you for all you do to support those in our community who don’t have the voice or ability to advocate for themselves. Living Hilo Style.
