Hawaii Community College recently celebrated the achievements of their students at the 2016 Student Recognition Ceremony.
Prior to the start of the program, we had wonderful music performed by Franz Kahele, former carpentry student and current Construction Academy instructor.
The program opened with a traditional kipaepae or welcoming ceremony. Another Construction Academy Instructor, Grant Kaaua, both chaired the event and served as the master of ceremonies that evening.
In addition to the academic achievement awards presented that evening, there were also special awards presented by companies supporting our college and our community such as Y. Hata & Company, Airgas Hawaii, Hilo Fish Company, HPM, KTA Super Stores, and The Gas Company. These companies and more donated money and/or equipment to deserving students. Some students were awarded things like a knife set, welder’s helmet, tools, and a Skilsaw.

Proud family and friends were on hand to see students being recognized for their academic achievements.
After the ceremony, there were pupu available that was prepared by the Hawaii Community College Culinary Program students. I recognized one of these students as the son of my former Waiakea High School colleague, Marlyn Akiona. I’m so happy to see her son all grown up and doing great! How time flies. Living Hilo Style.
