By Contributor Lori B. and Friends
Christ Lutheran Church is part of the Missouri Synod and has been spreading the gospel in Hilo since 1953 and is located at 595 Kapiolani Street. This year is the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran church founded by Martin Luther. This church has a reputation of having one of the best church rummage sales in East Hawaii with shoppers lining up at 6 a.m. to secure the best deals.Presently the J-Walk youth group has taken on the duties of organizing the rummage sale. The funds raised will assist the church youth group in attending the summer 2019 National Youth Gathering (NYG) in Minneapolis as well as supporting the church’s winter and summer local youth activities.Several members of the youth group attended the NYG 2013 in San Antonio and the 2016 NYG in New Orleans. The NYG averages 30,000 teenage Lutherans. One attendee said, “The feelings of being in the New Orleans Super Dome with that many other Lutherans is basically the most spiritual moment ever in any of our lives.”The church youth group has assisted with the Feeding the Hungry program based out of our church, made activity kits for the pediatric unit at Hilo Hospital, hosted an annual Christmas cookie decorating event, delivered goodies to the disadvantaged at the bus station on Christmas Eve, prepared Fat Tuesday breakfast on Sunday, helped with the annual Vacation Bible School in the summer, and participated in several church services throughout the church year. The rummage sales at this church have a reputation of having quality items, low prices, and very tasty baked goods. It seems that at this particular sale there are a lot of knick-knacks and framed pictures for sale. There are also kitchen items, sports equipment, clothing, plants, farm fresh fruit, holiday items, baby gear, geriatric goods, and other misc. items. The church, located across the Hospice of Hilo Center, is still accepting donations for the rummage sale. Drop off times are Thursday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.-12 noon.
