Only Easy: Misty’s 15-Minute Venison Chili

by Misty I.

In my household, my husband is the original hunter. He’s had his hunting license since he was in the 8th grade. I got my license in 1997 and started with bird hunting. Over the years, I have made the natural progression from game birds to game animals. But unlike game birds, mammals yield a lot of meat!

Lately, my girlfriend and I have been doing a fair amount of hunting and our husbands have been very patient teachers. They help us track the animals, help us set up quickly, let us take the first shot, and help us dress the animal. They even take us to hunting shows where we obsess over new gear, dream about future hunting adventures and meet legends like Jim Shockey! So much fun!!!

Don’t be fooled though, we are getting pretty close to doing everything on our own….errr….ok, maybe not the dressing part, but we are learning! A while back, we were lucky enough to go to Maui on a deer hunt. I shot my first doe and my girlfriend shot a buck! This venison chili recipe used the meat we harvested on that trip. I’ve found that venison is versatile, healthy and isn’t “gamey” at all.

This chili is perfect for a weeknight because it is “only easy.” You know what’s even easier? Tell your husband to make it! Haha! Of course, this recipe can be made with ground beef if you don’t have venison.
