Did you know the Lyman Mission House was once located in the middle of Haili Street? If you grew up in Hilo you probably went to the Lyman Museum as a kid, but perhaps you’ve forgotten the details. What’s great about Lyman Museum is that with your museum admission you also get to go to The Lyman Mission House! The Mission House tours located next door to the museum happen twice a day (11 a.m. and 2 p.m.) The Lyman Mission House is the third oldest wooden structure on the island after Hulihe’e Palace and Mokuaikaua Church. I recently took my son and I learned a lot while there.

If you are interested in the history of Hilo, I highly recommend doing a tour with Trustee Bruce McClure. He is a wealth of information and kept us engaged for an hour-long Mission House tour.

Although the second floor of the museum is being renovated we still enjoyed the exhibits on the first floor.

I won’t give away too much more. Christmas vacation is just a few weeks away, take your kids to Lyman Museum! Only in Hilo!
