I loved my Hawaii Eco farm box so much. This week there was a turnip and a bunch of Swiss chard both grown by OK Farms along with a recipe for braised turnips with Swiss chard greens.

I tried the recipe and love it. I found this recipe online on Cooking Light that looks very similar to the one Hawaii Eco shared with me. I just trimmed and peeled the turnip and cut it into small bite size pieces and cooked it in a hot skillet until it browned. I then added some chicken stock to cover the turnips, a T of apple cider vinegar, kosher salt, and some shichimi garlic pepper and let it simmer until the turnips cooked through – maybe around 5 minutes. I then brought the heat back up and added a big bunch of Swiss chard greens (I had both green and rainbow) and then cooked it until the liquid reduced. Just before turning the heat off, I added a teaspoon of local honey and about 2 teaspoons of butter and mixed it up.

All the people who eat vegetables in my household loved it. That was the first time I’ve ever made turnips! It was easy to cook and delicous. Living Hilo Style.
